What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle and non-invasive manual therapy, aimed at releasing restrictions, blockages or imbalances within the Craniosacral system, and rebalancing a person’s health on multiple levels. Craniosacral treatment aims to treat the problem at the source, rather than the symptoms, thereby enhancing the body’s natural ability for self-repair.

What is the Craniosacral System?

This important system includes the membranes and fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord, as well as the bones of the cranium (skull) down to the sacrum (tailbone).

The rhythmic fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid has a direct influence on the ultimate control system of the body, the central nervous system (CNS). Every cell in the body, including the organs and stuctures of the musculoskeletal, vascular, lymphatic, endocrine and respiratory systems, are connected to and controlled by the CNS. Any abnormalities in the craniosacral system can therefore have widespread effects, including sensory, motor and neurological issues. These could include chronic pain, learning difficulties, disrupted visceral (organ) function, motor-coordination impairments, headaches and migraines.

Common causes for imbalances include physical injuries, emotional stresses, toxicity and birth trauma.

What does it treat?

Conditions that may be helped with CST include:
• Migraines and Headaches
• Chronic Neck and Back Pain
• TMJ/jaw pain
• Sinusitis

• Stress and Tension related disorders
• Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Motor-coordination Impairments
• Digestive disorders and Colic
• Learning disabilities
• Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
• Chronic Fatigue

Our Craniosacral Therapist is also a Physiotherapist with close to 20 years’ experience, and has a special interest in working with trauma/PTSD and patterns of overwhelm, often working in conjunction with psychologists and counsellors. She treats cranial and facial issues, such as TMJ (jaw) symptoms, headaches, migraines, and sinusitis, and has extensive experience working with babies and children, especially following difficult births.

What to expect from a Craniosacral Therapy session?

The initial consultation will begin with a comprehensive assessment, looking at many different facets of a client’s history, lifestyle and health.
The treatment itself is very relaxing, with only a very light touch used to contact the bones in the cranium (skull), spine and other parts of the body. The client remains fully clothed during the treatment.
