An Introduction to the Arvigo® techniques of Maya abdominal therapy

When her uterus is out of alignment, a woman will feel out of balance; spiritually and physically – this is the philosophy at the root of this ancient technique. Throughout a woman’s life, physical strain, emotional stress, labour or seemingly innocent accidents can all affect uterine alignment.

The uterus is attached to different parts of the pelvic bones through tendons. It should be able to move freely in its space. But the uterus can get ‘stuck’. One example: if it is tilting backwards – which would be called a retroverted uterus in medical terms – there can be constipation in the lead up to a period as the growing uterus blocks the intestines; painful periods as the uterus has to work harder to get blood out during menstruation, or dark brownish spotting at the end of periods as blood from previous periods has ‘stayed behind’.

Arvigo® is a gentle approach that massages the entire abdomen and addresses tension around the hips, sacrum and the coccyx. This is a powerful tool to break up stagnation, loosen adhesion and move lymph, qi and blood to create space for balance and realignment.

I got into Arvigo® abdominal massage because as an acupuncturist I wanted to give my patients something they can do themselves in between acupuncture sessions. I love teaching and empowering my patients and this seemed a great fit with the philosophy of holistic healthcare I practice with TCM.

The results so far have gone beyond my expectations. I see two distinct sets of people seeking me out specifically for abdominal massage: women with menstrual problems such as painful periods, endometriosis, PCOS, fertility support and menopause support; and people with abdominal pain and digestive issues, such as IBS. Many people have a bit of both, then find they come for one and get improvement for both.

Now I will often recommend to add a set of three massages, one per month, to a course of acupuncture treatments; especially when there is a lot of pain. In these sessions I teach how to do a simple self-care routine at home and then there is time to learn whatever is relevant for the individual patient. For example, I would often teach the basics of charting your own cycle; but really it could be anything relating to the individual needs of each patient.
