arvigo massage

An Introduction to the Arvigo-style techniques of Maya abdominal therapy

When her uterus is out of alignment, a woman will feel out of balance; spiritually and physically – this is the philosophy at the root of this ancient technique. Throughout a woman’s life, physical strain, emotional stress, labour or seemingly innocent accidents can all affect uterine alignment.

The uterus is attached to different parts of the pelvic bones through tendons. It should be able to move freely in its space. But the uterus can get ‘stuck’. One example: if it is tilting backwards – which would be called a retroverted uterus in medical terms – there can be constipation in the lead up to a period as the growing uterus blocks the intestines; painful periods as the uterus has to work harder to get blood out during menstruation, or dark brownish spotting at the end of periods as blood from previous periods has ‘stayed behind’.

Our style is a gentle approach that massages the entire abdomen and addresses tension around the hips, sacrum and the coccyx. This is a powerful tool to break up stagnation, loosen adhesion and move lymph, qi and blood to create space for balance and realignment.

We generally  see two distinct sets of people seeking out abdominal massage: Women with menstrual problems such as painful periods, endometriosis, PCOS, fertility support and menopause support; and people with abdominal pain and digestive issues, such as IBS. Many people have a bit of both, then find they come for one and get improvement for both.

We will often recommend adding a set of three massages, one per month, possibly in addition to an acupuncture treatment; especially when there is a lot of pain. In these sessions she will  teach how to do a simple self-care routine at home and then there is time to learn whatever else may be relevant for the individual patient.
